Commentary
Except for the interpretation of o.2, the edition basically follows the one given by Molina 2014.
o.2: ĝeš šum2-ma, literally „wood added“, describes the aromatization of oils and fats by aromatic woods. References for this phrase in the Sargonic texts from Adab were collected by Molina 2014: 74, although without interpretation. It is attested both for „sesame oil“ (i3-ĝeš; CUSAS 13 029; CUSAS 35 318:1; both probably Middle Sargonic) and for „lard“ (i3-šaḫa2; SCTRAH 027; also TCBI 1 102 and TCBI 1 103). SCTRAH 033 o. 1 indicates the quality of the oil in a double form as „fragrant oil, aromatized with wood“ (i3 du10-ga ĝeš šum2-ma), without differentiating whether the base substance is lard or sesame oil. The phrase is already attested in Presargonic Umma: i3 ĝeš šum2-ma „fat, aromatized with wood“ (CUSAS 33 268 r. i 3; here the term i3 probably refers to butter). The aromatization with wood is expressed in different ways, the earliest form is simply i3 ĝeš „oil with wood“.
