Commentary

An important amount of sesame was brought (mu.kux: Akkadian šūrubtum) by Ana-Dagan-taklāku, actually an “agrarian entrepreneur” (engar: Akkadian ikkarum1In the case of the Mari kingdom, the ikkarū did not till the land themselves but managed teams of workers mainly for the palace, in contrast to the ikkarū in southern Mesopotamia.) in the city of Dizum (Iddizum?; for Iddizum see Durand 1987b: 205) located in the district of Mari[geogr=Mari]; not to be confused with Ana-Dagan-taklāku the merchant, who is attested in CRRAI 51 15 (l. 28; cf. Charpin 2008: 4) and FM 15 077 (col.ii, l. 39). A list of requisitioned fields was sealed by him (Reculeau 2018a: 442): according to his seal, he was a servant of the goddess Ninsianna.

The expression “according to the 1/2 ‚correct‘ pānum-measure” could maybe refer to the payment of the biltum-tax for the palace (Chambon 2018: 59), which Ana-Dagan-taklāku has collected in the cultivated land under his responsibility.

The date is important: the Month IX in the calendar of Mari corresponds to November-December, the harvest time for sesame, a summer crop; see Dossier A.1.1.18.
